The Villa Dessauer was built in Bamberg in 1884 in the neo-Renaissance style by the Jewish hop trader Carl Dessauer . Today the building is a gallery for modern art with exhibitions that change all year round.

history

The magnificent building served as a representative representation of its social position.

For a long time, the Villa Dessauer represented a social center of the "better" Bamberg society. During the Nazi era , the then Jewish owner Max Pretzfelder was kidnapped and murdered by the Nazis and the villa was confiscated. After the war, the villa, which had meanwhile been transferred back to Max Pretzfelder's son, was sold by him to the city of Bamberg.

In 1987 a gallery was set up which is used for special exhibitions by the museums of the city of Bamberg and the Bamberg Art Association.

Since 1987 there have been regular changing exhibitions, lectures and musical events in the Villa Dessauer, which are mainly organized by the museums of the city of Bamberg. The Kunstverein Bamberg eV and the Professional Association of Visual Artists Upper Franconia (BBK) also exhibit here. Temporary exhibitions by regional as well as international artists and photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries take place in the stately rooms.

The rapid art series newly created by the museums of the city of Bamberg offers artists the opportunity to use the premises relatively spontaneously and for a short time in intermediate phases of larger exhibitions.

Exhibitions

In solo and group exhibitions, the gallery presented photographs and works by well-known artists such as Robert S. Gessner , Markus Karstieß , Oliver Mark , Walter Schels , Manfred Schmidt , FK Waechter , as well as works by formative artists of the 20th century such as Andy Warhol , Joseph Beuys or Pablo Picasso .
