Robert S. Gessner

Robert Salomon Gessner (born September 20, 1908 in Zurich ; † December 26, 1982 in Locarno ) was a Swiss painter, graphic artist and representative of the Zurich School of Concrete .

Life

He was born the son of the judge Karl Eduard Gessner and his wife Selma Regula. From 1924 Robert S. Gessner occupied himself with abstract and non-representational painting. From 1925 to 1927 he completed an apprenticeship as a window dresser at the Jelmoli department store in Zurich. From 1927 to 1931 he attended the Zurich School of Applied Arts in the class of Alfred Altherr , later he moved to the graphics class, where he came into contact with teachers Walter Roshardt , Ernst Keller, Karl Hügin , Otto Meyer-Amden and Ernst Gubler . From 1932 Gessner worked as a freelance commercial / commercial graphic artist and painter. In 1938 he became a member of the artists' association allianz , which was founded the year before by Leo Leuppi and Richard Paul Lohse and emerged from the circle of the Zurich Concretists. From 1940 to 1956 Robert S. Gessner was responsible for the training of apprentices and volunteers at the Zurich School of Applied Arts, in 1944 and 1945 he was an assistant teacher, from 1957 to 1963 a specialist teacher for drawing for drawing, vice-rector at Hans Fischer and head of apprenticeship training. In the years 1957 to 1963 various stays in Ibiza followed.
