Karstieß sculptures are mainly shaped by his hands. The handprint is therefore always present in terms of content and formally determining. Karstieß primarily deals with ceramic materials and uses various techniques for firing his objects, such as: B. the old Japanese raku technique or old Arabic luster techniques. A common part of his creative process is dismantling and reassembling the individual parts to form a new whole. His oeuvre in terms of content extends from the series of works Fetish , which has received increased criticism, through his mirrors to large room installations such as the work Kammer .

In 2016 he cooperated with the Düsseldorf artist Christian Jendreiko in the work Soft Revolution . In an announcement by the Dortmund Art Association it says:

“The sounds in the performance Soft Revolution by Markus Karstieß (* 1971 in Haan / Rhld.) And Christian Jendreiko (* 1969 in Recklinghausen) appear as if from another planet . The tensegrity structures of Richard Buckminster Fuller and Kenneth Snelson using, the two artists have designed a stringed instrument can enter the three forces fields in interaction: the people, the artifact and the game with the natural forces of train / return ".
