The Kunsthaus Nordrhein-Westfalen Kornelimünster (until 2015 art from NRW ) shows exhibitions by young artists from North Rhine-Westphalia , Belgium and the Netherlands and the collection of funding purchases in the field of fine arts of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Administratively, the Kunsthaus is subordinate to the Ministry for Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . The art house is housed in the former imperial abbey Kornelimünster in Aachen - Kornelimünster , in the residence of the abbots.

Funding purchases

The purchase of works from the field of fine arts by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia began shortly after the currency reform in 1948 . In the first year of funding purchases, the Ministry of Culture of the newly created state acquired a total of 204 works of art to secure the livelihood of modern artists ostracized by the National Socialists as well as talented young artists. Many of these new acquisitions were hung up in the state government guest house at the request of cabinet members.

The purchases and the promotion prizes awarded annually by the state are intended to provide ideal and financial support for individual artists who are at the beginning of their work with reference to North Rhine-Westphalia through purchase or prize, and to direct public awareness of these artists.

In the collection rooms of the former imperial abbey, a tour gives an insight into the development of the fine arts in North Rhine-Westphalia from the end of the war to the present.

This permanent exhibition is accompanied by changing exhibitions of young artists from North Rhine-Westphalia, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Comparison with museums and collections

With the task of managing and publicly exhibiting the acquired art assets, the fund of art from NRW has a special position between museums and public collections. The fund is based in principle on funding purchases, so the essential feature of regularity in the sense of completing a collection as the core of a museum exhibition is missing. A cross-section of artistic work since 1945 is shown, which is not based on market tendencies or public taste. Some of the supported artists are internationally famous today, with the purchases mostly taking place in the earlier work phases of these artists. Since the end of 2015, a committee that rotates every three years has decided on the purchases.

The institution is closely connected to the Euregio Belgium-Netherlands-Germany near Aachen through the public exhibition of modern art in the building of the former imperial abbey . In the garden hall there are regular cultural events organized by the Kornelimünster eV cultural initiative.

Former imperial abbey in Aachen-Kornelimünster

The current appearance of the five-winged castle-like monastery building goes back to the beginning of the 18th century. In terms of art history, the complex can be assigned to the late baroque of the Aachen-Liège region. With the end of the Second World War, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia became the owner of the property. Since 1976 the former imperial abbey has been the seat of the institution Kunst aus NRW, since 2015 Kunsthaus Nordrhein-Westfalen Kornelimünster. Since the completion of the restoration work in 2001, the main and flanking side wings have been open to the public.
