Mischa Kuball
Mischa Kuball (born September 20, 1959 in Düsseldorf ) is a German conceptual artist and has been working in public and institutional spaces since 1977.
Mischa Kuball has been professor for public art at the Art Academy for Media, Cologne , associated professor for media art at the University of Design / ZKM , Karlsruhe and since 2015 a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts NRW, Düsseldorf.
Life
In 1990 he received the ars viva sponsorship award from the Kulturkreis in the Federal Association of German Industry in Cologne, and in 1991 a grant for contemporary photography from the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen and Halbach Foundation in Essen. He was awarded the sponsorship award of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for fine arts in 1992. He received several grants, including a. 1996 the work grant from the Stiftung Kunstfonds Bonn, 1997 in New York from the Stiftung Kunst und Kultur NRW, Düsseldorf and a work grant for Brazil and Japan from the Ministry for Family, Urban Development and Culture NRW, Düsseldorf. In 1998 he contributed the German contribution to the 24th São Paulo Biennale and received a grant from the Villa Massimo in Rome. In January 2016, Kuball was awarded the German Light Art Prize, which is awarded by the Robert Simon Art Foundation in the Kunstmuseum Celle .
In 1999/2000 he was visiting professor at the University for Graphics and Book Art in Leipzig on the subject of "Light and Space". In 2004 he held a substitute professorship at the State University for Design Karlsruhe , department of media art, and from 2005 to 2008 a regular professorship, where he founded the '1A18' format with students. Since October 2007 he has been professor for media art at the Art Academy for Media Cologne (KHM). In 2007 the student project -1 / MinusEins Experimental Laboratory was founded at the KHM, as well as cooperation with institutions at home and abroad.
In 2010 he realized the participatory project NEW POTT as part of the RUHR.2010 - European Capital of Culture with families from around 100 nations living in the Ruhr Metropolis. a. with the art collections of the Ruhr University Bochum . The reader “New Pott: Neue Heimat im Revier” was published in 2011 for the project. An accompanying conference volume: "New Relations in Art and Society" was published in 2012 by Fridericke Wappler.
Mischa Kuball has been realizing a series of installations in public space under the title “public preposition” since 2009: Venice 2009, Marfa 2009, Toronto 2011, Bern 2011, Wolfsburg 2012, Jerusalem 2012, Katowice 2012, Christchurch 2012. The “public prepositions” reflect Mischa Kuball's ongoing interest in an artistic exploration of abstract forms and symbolic communication. "Preposition" here refers to the syntactic function of the preposition and describes a middle position for the works between the historically and socially connoted places and the artistic intervention.
In 2013, Kuball and the American artist Anthony McCall showed the light installation El-Aleph in the Faena Arts Center in the Puerto Madero district of Buenos Aires in Argentina . In 2015 he was elected to the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts .
From November 20, 2016 to April 30, 2017 the Kirchner Museum Davos will be showing his room installation “Light on Kirchner”, in which he uses his artistic means to deal with the works of the painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner .
