Anthony McCall (* 1946 in London ) is an artist who lives and works in New York .

life and work

Anthony McCall trained as a designer at Ravenbourne College of Art and Design in London between 1964 and 1968 . From 1971 on he appeared as an experimental filmmaker and gave his first performances . In 1975 he received the Marie Josi Prize at the 5th International Experimental Film Competition in Knokke for his film Line Describing a Cone , which is still considered one of his key works . His experimental films are considered contributions to expanded cinema (an expanded understanding of film) that emerged in the 1970s, as well as "solid light films" (for example: films made from pure light). They are still assigned to a new “geometric” cinema.

Anthony McCall's films or installations that make use of cinematic means essentially deal with questions that address space, form and time. For example, he uses computer-controlled light beams from a projector , with which three-dimensional shapes are created in the dark space between the projector and screen and become almost three-dimensional through the use of fog. In such cases, unlike in the cinema, viewers are involved in that they can (and should) move around in the projection room. He creates other effects by using several projectors ( Long Film for Four Projectors , six hours duration, 1974 ).

McCall moved to New York USA in 1973 , where he continued his work on the "Solid ligtht films" and other variations of his work Line Describing a Cone . In 1977 he was a participant in Documenta 6 in Kassel . Towards the end of the 1970s he retired as a practicing artist. After more than twenty years, McCall reappeared on the art market and continued the practice he developed in the 1970s, but now uses electronic media such as computers with CAD software and projectors instead of analog film. Anthony McCall's work has met with a lively international response. a. can be seen in a large number of group and solo exhibitions.
