Beihingen Castle

The Alte Schloss Beihingen is a 13th century castle in Freiberg am Neckar in the Ludwigsburg district in Baden-Württemberg . It consists of two half-timbered buildings opposite each other , which are enclosed by a wall.

history

The oldest building of the castle is probably the so-called stone house which was built around 1480. However, previous Romanesque buildings already existed, of which only the tower has been partially preserved. In the 15th century, the previous castle must have been largely changed, which can be seen, for example, from the corner and defensive towers on the south side. Until Ludwig von Freiberg bought it in 1534, the castle belonged to the von Nothracht and Stammheim families . Under the Lords of Freiberg, the castle was given its current appearance from 1546. After the castle had changed hands several times, the Gemmingen bought the castle in 1710 and built several farm buildings.

In the 19th century the stone house served as the residence of the manorial administrator. After the Second World War, the castle was unused until the then independent municipality of Beihingen decided to buy the castle in 1965. The old castle reopened in 1969 after extensive three-year renovation work. Today the castle houses the city archive, a library and eleven apartments.
