Bietigheim Castle

The castle Bietigheim is an Outbound castle in the district of the city Bietigheim Bietigheim-Bissingen in the district of Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg . There are no visible remains of the castle.

history

Archaeological studies have shown that the castle was built in the 12th century. It is possible that the Lords of Bietigheim built the castle. However, this could not have happened without the consent of the Counts of Vaihingen , who gave Bietigheim as a fief. Is first mentioned in the castle Bietigheim 1279, when Konrad Körnlin, called by Schmidelfeld the monastery Lorch all his possessions except the castle, the associated own people donated and the right to fish. It is presumed that the castle was destroyed in a feud by Count Eberhart the illustrious in 1291 except for half the keep and the chapel. The remains of the tower used as a bell tower collapsed on March 1, 1542, killing nine people. This is evidenced by an inscription on one of the northern buttresses of the town church. Historical reports describe that the tower fell apart into all four sides at that time. As a result, the wine press , nine houses and barns, the fruit box and the town church were destroyed or damaged. During the structural securing of the wine press, the area was archaeologically examined in 1984 and 1985.

investment

The former extent of the castle area can still be seen today at least approximately in the course of Pfarrstrasse and Turmstrasse. In historical sources, the dimensions of the tower were given with an edge length of 17 meters, so up to the time of the excavation it was assumed that it was a residential tower . The town church is likely to be based on the former castle chapel . The archaeological investigations showed that the southwest corner of the wine press is placed on the foundations of a defensive tower. The square tower had an edge length of 11.5 meters and a wall thickness of 3.5 meters. It is presumed that the tower was built at least in part with found humpback blocks . At a distance of one meter from the tower, in the eastern area of the wine press, a double wall was found consisting of two parts . The development within has not yet been investigated. In the eastern area of the wine press, the west wall of a castle building that cannot be explained in more detail was excavated. The northern moat could be located in the area of Turmstrasse. The southern moat is on the south side of the town church. The trench was around 12 meters wide.
