features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is about 18 to 24 millimeters. Front and rear wings are colored black-gray to black-brown. The middle field is somewhat darker, delimited by indistinct transverse lines and provided with a black discal spot. The hind wings show only a faded or hardly noticeable drawing. Fine, black fringes can be seen on the outer edge of all wings.
Similar species
In Glacies noricana the drawing occasionally shimmers slightly green, while the forewings in Glacies coracina are often whitishly dusty and are also drawn with much more contrast.
distribution and habitat
The species occurs in the high altitudes of mountains, mainly in the Alpine countries , but also in the Czech Republic , Poland , Romania , Slovakia and the Ukraine . Glacies alpinata rises to heights of 3000 meters, the main habitat are stony alpine meadows and the edges of scree fields.
Way of life
The moths are diurnal and fly restlessly close to the ground in the sunshine. They like to rest with their wings spread flat on stones and rocks, where they are very well camouflaged due to their coloring. The main flight time is from June to September. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various lower plants and overwinter.
Danger
In Germany, Glacies alpinata occurs only in the Bavarian Alps, but here in large numbers . The species is therefore listed as not endangered on the Red List of Endangered Species .
