Theodor A. Wohlfahrt

Theodor Albrecht Friedrich Wohlfahrt (born September 19, 1907 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , † February 7, 2006 in Würzburg ) was a German zoologist and important lepidopterologist (butterfly scientist).

Professional career

During his studies, Theodor A. Wohlfahrt became a member of the Leipzig University Choir of St. Pauli in 1926 . He received his doctorate “summa cum laude” from the University of Munich under Karl von Frisch in 1932 . He received the faculty award for his doctoral thesis on anatomical studies on the minnow's labyrinth . In 1937 he completed his habilitation in Munich with work on the side channels of fish. His request for a teaching position in Munich was rejected because of his liberal attitude. The Berlin Reich Ministry assigned him to the University of Würzburg , where he worked from 1942 at the Zoological Institute (then at Röntgenring 10) as a scientific assistant and private lecturer and until 1972 as a professor of zoology and comparative anatomy.

In his scientific work after the end of the Second World War , he dealt a lot with butterflies and especially with the sail butterfly ( Iphiclides podalirius ). At that time the moth was still often on the dry slopes around Würzburg and it carried out studies on intraspecific variability and diapause control . To do this, he bred the moths in large numbers under defined environmental conditions.

Most of his butterfly collection is housed in the zoological state collection in Munich , some boxes with native butterflies remained in the teaching collection of the Biozentrum in Würzburg.

Publications

Theodor A. Wohlfahrt illustrated the five-volume standard work The Butterflies of Central Europe (1954–1981), for which Walter Forster wrote the texts, with drawings and watercolors.
