The castle Marbach is a former city castle at Castle Square South of Market Street at the Upper Gate in Marbach am Neckar in the district of Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg .

The castle was built in the 12th century. Around 1250 the wood system at that time was replaced by one made of quarry stone and around 1300 a moat and the outer curtain wall were built towards the city ; the castle was integrated into the 10 m high city wall and flanked the upper gate tower (city gate). In 1302 the city is sold by the dukes of Teck to Count Eberhard von Württemberg . Around 1400 the castle was abandoned and large parts of the castle complex were demolished in order to build a castle that was burned down by the French in 1693 during the Palatinate War of Succession . The castle was not rebuilt and demolished. From 1978 to 1982 remains were excavated and conserved.

In the place of the main castle, there is now an empty square that once housed several buildings. In addition to the foundation walls of the keep, there are the foundations of the palace , of which the castle cellar has been preserved and can be visited.
