Hartmut Schäfer

Hartmut Schäfer (* 1943 ) is a German medieval archeologist and art historian .

Schäfer studied at the Universities of Göttingen , Munich and Istanbul . In 1970 he received his doctorate in Göttingen with a thesis on Gül Camii , a Byzantine church in Constantinople . He then received a scholarship at the Central Institute for Art History in Munich and a 1971/72 travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . After a brief activity at the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Munich, he worked in medieval archeology at the State Monuments Office in Baden-Württemberg from January 1, 1974 . From 1987 until his retirement on January 31, 2008 he was head of the Archeology of the Middle Ages department. He was involved in numerous excavations and building studies in Baden-Württemberg .
