Christian Hoischen's work is characterized by an all-pervasive eclecticism , starting with the material: A composite of carbon fiber, glass fiber and epoxy give the pictures their technoid, object-like character, which can be deduced from Hoischen's work as a sculptor. In alienated cars, lamps or abstract assemblages he balances between ready-made, design and fictional figure - things that seem strangely alive, as if they had been left behind on a film set.

In Hoischen's painting, too, the person seems to be present and absent at the same time. His motifs, which he recruits with an eye for the well-known from the media world, convey a fragmented past, be it baroque, pop art or psychological thriller. Hoischen paints these motifs into the material composite. The result is overlays of signets full of art and film historical references: Caravaggio's The incredulous Thomas meets Romy Schneider , framed by geometric color fields. The Death Metal lettering from David Lynch's psychological flick Inland Empire adorns sleeping naked women in front of a mirror with a gold frame. An empty modernist chair looks as if one of Francis Bacon's popes had recently left it. A rococo vase is reminiscent of an urn. In fact, Hoischen's painting is a gently blurred, morbid mixture of Gothic kitsch and pop collage, supplemented by spots and splotches of color that spread like informal footnotes across the pale light of the open spaces. Even pictures fresh from the studio seem like battered evidence of postmodernism . Decadence and historicism, the classic themes of the decadence era towards the end of the 19th century, Hoischen condenses in a language that exposes the 21st century as a revenant of this time.

Works in collections

Works by Christian Hoischen can be found in the Alison & Peter W. Klein Collection in Eberdingen- Nussdorf, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection in Vienna , the David Roberts Collection in London , the Hölzel Collection in Berlin , the Burger Collection in Zurich and Hong Kong , the Kraus (Jill & Peter S. Kraus) Collection in New York and in private collections.

In 2017, Hoischen designed a cycle for the representative foyers and lobby of Palais Varnhagen Berlin, which deals with the intellectual and historical cosmos of the building's namesake, Rahel Varnhagen , her salons, friendships and cultural relationships.
