Ralf Ziervogel (born February 11, 1975 in Clausthal-Zellerfeld ) is a German artist . His works include drawings, installations, videos and texts. Ralf Ziervogel lives and works in New York and Berlin .

Life

Ralf Ziervogel completed a master 's degree in fine arts at the Berlin University of the Arts in 2005 in Lothar Baumgarten's class . Ziervogel was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation , received the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff scholarship in 2006 and lived in New York from 2007-2011, a. a. funded by the one-year New York scholarship from the Berlin Senate's cultural administration, in collaboration with the Triangle Art Association. In 2014 he received the scholarship at the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo / Casa Baldi . In the same year he was awarded the graphics prize of the Claus Hüppe Foundation in Oldenburg. In 2016 he received a residency grant at the Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral , Rhineland-Palatinate. 2013–2016 Ralf Ziervogel taught sculpture at the Berlin-Weissensee School of Art .

Ralf Ziervogel is known for detailed, exaggerated apocalyptic drawings in which contoured figures go through meandering excesses of violence in black and white. Seen from a distance, they form an ornamental network. In 2007 Ralf Ziervogel took part in the “ Made in Germany ” exhibition with drawings of this kind , which showed young art from Germany. His drawings caused a sensation and were discussed in detail in the feature pages. The reviewers initially brought them close to the medieval torture scenarios of Hieronymus Bosch as well as the subversive underground comics of Robert Crumb and the films of Quentin Tarantino .

In addition to graphic works that are up to 3 x 10 meters in size, Ziervogel is dedicated to interventions and video works.

Ziervogel has been drawing with black gouache on his fingertips since 2013. His fingers repeat the movements on paper that they would make when using tablets or smartphones. The words and sentences written afterwards in capital letters, but in minisculer, barely legible script, which accompany the black fingerprints, are a kind of protocol and form a second layer in the drawing. Large formats follow, with the use of all body parts (head, arms, legs, feet, etc.). The compositions of black individual parts become dynamic constellations and remote living beings: “Amorphous structures, frozen in epileptic stasis. - Blueprints, exhumed bodies, from our time. ”(Quote: Jutta Schütt , Städel Museum / Graphic Collection, Frankfurt am Main, 2015)

Ziervogel has been working together with structural engineers Schlaich Bergermann und Partner and David Chipperfield Architects since 2008 on the implementation of the ECCE construction project on Tempelhof Airfield, a white, walk-on cube with an edge length of 120 meters and the largest cantilevered roof in the world.
