Robert Knöfel

Gottlieb Robert Knöfel (born February 5, 1834 in Wilsdruff near Dresden ; † June 14, 1884 in Vienna ) was a German shoemaker , founder of the Dresden Workers' Education Association (1860) and city councilor in Dresden (1862–1866).

Life

Knöfel learned the shoemaker's trade from his father, went on a hike and then worked for five years in Weimar , where he also took lessons in drawing, geometry and anatomy. After taking the master craftsman's examination in Dresden in 1860, he founded a workers' education association in which he taught young professionals the subjects of drawing , geometry , anatomy and bookkeeping . Knöfel gave lectures all over Germany , took part in the “Congress of Austro-Hungarian Master Shoemakers” in 1873 and settled in Vienna. He co-founded the “Wiener Schuhmacherzeitung”, in 1875 the “Neue Wiener Schuhmacherzeitung” and opened a private “Wiener Schuhmacher-Lehranstalt” in 1876, for which he received official approval in 1879. Knöfel developed the so-called "Winckel system" for the production of patterns and influenced the development of the shoemaking trade throughout Europe with textbooks and specialist books, including " Textbook of Footwear Art " (1872) .
