Intervention (visual arts)

According to its intention and public perception, an intervention in the visual arts is an intervention in existing contexts in the public outside and inside. In contrast to installation, this is done without an order and is usually illegal. In this respect, the intervention is comparable to street art and urban art . Similar to the performance , the focus is on the mostly temporary existence and less on the objects that remain permanently behind.

The intervention takes place indoors and outdoors. It addresses societal, cultural, functional, spatial and material aspects of what has changed . Alluding to intervention in politics , artistic intervention often deals with the antagonism between power and impotence.

Like graffiti and street art, the intervention is often carried out without commissioning or approval. Materials of all kinds as well as non-objective and fleeting things such as time, light, sound and movement in space can be used in an intervention.

Like Land Art, intervention is part of art in public space . Important representatives of this site-specific art are Daniel Buren , Eberhard Bosslet , Gordon Matta-Clark , Christo , pttred , Christian Hasucha
