pttred

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

pttred ( paint the town red ) was a German artist duo, consisting of Stefan Micheel ("st.eel") and Hans Hs Winkler . The action and installation artist couple was active in Berlin and other places from 1988 to 2001.

Exhibitions and projects

The duo worked in the field of art in public space and coined the term “urban space installation” through the urban space works goldener schnitt durch Berlin in 1988 and red shift in 1990, in Berlin.

During the “The Mountain and the Machine” campaign in 1989, pttred undertook a mountain tour to the Zugspitze and removed the highest geological parameter in Germany, the Zugspitze. The summit rock was carried into the valley and transported to the machine in Berlin, where it was crushed in pttred's premises in a four-week process.

During the “Ursa in orbit” campaign: in 1993, pttred hiked through the Berchtesgaden National Park for two days in search of the old bear grounds, dressed in bear costumes . Staged encounters with tourists at a certain distance could not be avoided.

The action "How much red does the Statue of Liberty bear" took place in 1996 and took place after a 14-day observation of the security system of the Statue of Liberty. A security gap of 15 minutes became apparent for pttred, which gave the freedom to place red filters on 56 directional spotlights. On the night of June 25, 1996, the Statue of Liberty at the gates of New York shone for the first time in red light. From 1994 pttred deployed completely self-sufficient natural robots as twittering machines in unspoilt natural areas such as on La Gomera , in Iceland and on Lake Walchen in Bavaria. Further chirping machines were installed in Central Park in New York, in Berlin and in the middle of the Vatican garden . The secret of the machines was that they brought their sound into the natural space, hidden and invisible.

In 1997 pttred initiated the Extra-Parliamentary Situation in Langenhagen project ( Ulrike Meinhof talks about her arrest in Langenhagen). The arrest of Ulrike Meinhof on June 15, 1972 at Walsroder Strasse 11 stuck in the collective memory of the city of Langenhagen. 25 years later, pttred commemorates this in a week-long artistic campaign (February 24-28, 1997) on art in public spaces. With 59 posters hung in the city area, the group of artists indicates a (fictional) event, thus triggering a heated discussion. The lecture by Ulrike Meinhof on the market square, announced for February 28, 1997, was prepared for the audience with a lectern and chairs and offered space for reflection, after all, nobody appeared; the audience remained to themselves and discussed the unclear situation. The local and national press reported attentively about this artistic action as part of the On-Site in Langenhagen series, and later also in various specialist articles. Even in SPIEGEL and the two art journals art - Das Kunstmagazin und Kunstforum pttred made it with this project.

In 1998, the project treffpunkt no man's land on the Brenner followed with the participation of artists from Germany, Austria, Italy and the USA, including Maurizio Cattelan and Walter Niedermayr . Two thousand meters above the Brenner Pass, pttred converted a mountain hut into a hermit library . The library was stocked with book suggestions from over 50 written philosophers, writers and scientists from all over the world. In the no man's land between the Italian and Austrian border lines, a visitor could read books and spend the night if he had previously picked up the key in the station restaurant on the Brenner.

reception

The tip magazine from Berlin wrote in 1990: "Paint the town red have left with their forms of art have long been the studio. (...) Art thus arises as the result of planning and intervention in and participation in daily work processes. The strategy means a new form of realism in exploring concrete relationships. Art becomes a strategic game that is still about the sensual appropriation of the world, but no longer about the development of an individual signature. "

In 1994 at Kunstforum international , Marius Babias wrote about pttred: “The main focus of the artist duo is on the calculated intervention in urban spaces, its aesthetic control and its social countermeasures [...]”.

In 1997 the Berliner Zeitung wrote about the “unusual exhibition of international artists in the Hellersdorf gallery 'HO'”, in which pttred documented the ursa in orbit project from 1993: “In the Berchtesgaden forest, the two were out and about in bear costumes. The deadly serious reactions of the local press 'Bär shocked Wanderer' hang next to the pictures. "

In 2000, the magazine art - Das Kunstmagazin described pttred's art projects as “a mixture of Dada and happening, Land Art and Eulenspiegelei”. The Berlin duo fool the audience's viewing habits "with subtle, clever and sometimes poetic interventions in everyday life".
