The Kunstverein Familie Montez e. V. is a registered art association in Frankfurt am Main , which is dedicated to the mediation of contemporary art . It was founded in 2007 by the artists Mirek Macke and Anja Czioska on the premises of the Städelshof . The house became an exhibition center with an exhibition area of 1300 m². In addition, the art association organizes lecture series, film programs, performances, music events, summer academies and parties.

history

Mirek Macke, b. on October 16, 1959 in Iława , studied interdisciplinary art from 1989 to 1994 at the Frankfurt Städelschule under Hermann Nitsch . Anja Czioska, b. on October 24, 1965, studied from 1987 to 1995 at various art colleges. From 1987 to 1993 she was part of Peter Kubelka's experimental film class at the Städelschule. In 1991 she studied at the Art Academy Rotterdam , in 1994 in the field of film at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) and from 1994 to 1995 in the sculpture class with Georg Herold at the Städelschule.

Mirek Macke is the director of the art association. Christiaan Tonnis captured the preparations for the exhibition and vernissages in 104 video documentations. The art association has around 30 members.

The Montez family art association was based in downtown Frankfurt until May 30, 2012 at Breite Gasse 24, between Konstablerwache and Frankfurt am Main Zoo . The name Städelshof (also Städel'scher Hof ) for the property has been handed down since the 18th century. The Frankfurt private banker and trader Johann Friedrich Städel , founder of the Städel art institute and the Städelschule named after him, ran a trading company for coffee, tea, spices, dyes and precious metals in the Städelshof until his death in 1817. The market hall on the property was later used for trading fruit and vegetables. From 2000 onwards, art exhibitions were held in the building, which were organized by the Städelschule and the Offenbach School of Design .

Exhibitions

In its first solo exhibition, Horsepower, in 2007, the Kunstverein showed paintings by Sven Tadic. Further solo exhibitions were dedicated to Thomas Nolden, Florian Heinke and others.

In 2008 and 2009 , the group exhibition My Generation , organized in five stages, included Christa Näher , Thomas Zipp , Manfred Peckl, Tobias Rehberger and Thomas Bayrle . The final exhibition Good is what likes presented works by Frankfurt artists that were created during the 2009 summer studio .

In 2010 the Kunstverein presented the joint exhibition Der Meister und seine Muse by Hermann Nitsch and Vroni Schwegler. A documentation of Hermann Nitsch's 122nd action from 2005 in the Vienna Burgtheater as well as recordings of the 107th action with Vroni Schwegler, parts one and two, were presented. Vroni Schwegler showed small-format drypoint etchings and animal portraits in oil on wood, pressboard or cardboard.

During the Luminale 2010, the Kunstverein presented a lamp installation by the artist duo Kehres & Hungerer with the title: Heavy – Medium – Light . In the vaulted cellar, Leonie Langenstein hung the last lightbulb as a memorial in a listed area from the 17th century.

Closure and reopening of the Kunstverein

On the occasion of a vernissage of the exhibition from 18 in November 2010, the building supervision of the city of Frankfurt became aware of the art association and issued a ban on use due to safety deficiencies. In order to be able to use the venue for exhibitions and meetings and to meet the fire protection requirements, renovation measures were necessary. Director Mirek Macke organized an auction in December 2010 to save Lola Montez . Robert Bock made his exhibition space available for an art auction, while the auctioneer was Philip Augustin from the Döbritz art and auction house. Around 100 paintings, photographs and objects brought proceeds of 25,000 euros and thus the financial foundation for the renovation. Tobias Rehberger , Heiner Blum and Christa Näher took part in the auction . After renovations planned by the Frankfurt architect Bernd Mey , the Kunstverein reopened on March 24, 2011. With Outside in front of the door, based on the post-war drama by Wolfgang Borchert , the art association showed an exhibition by the painter and sculptor Lionel Röhrscheid. Kasper König spoke at the opening .

Final closure - The Honsell Bridge as a new location in 2014

Before the Kunstverein moved in: The Honsell Bridge during the second phase of the complete renovation in November 2012

On May 30, 2012, the Kunstverein had to permanently close its headquarters at Breiten Gasse 24 . The owner of the approximately 2000 square meter area, Konrad Pohl, “sold the building to the Westend-based company Quissenz GmbH for twelve million euros.” In 2013, Mirek Macke planned a new beginning for his art association in the two listed arches of the Honsell Bridge at Frankfurt's Westhafen . “Together with the Städelschule graduate Valentina Stanojev, he [...] developed a concept. The two arches should be connected to each other ”and according to plans by the Städel student and architect Bernd Mey, they will be expanded into an art gallery and a café. Macke is to use the art gallery with changing exhibitions. For the first time on July 29th, Macke organized the four-stage exhibition series A Sunday in the Open in Front of the Unfinished Round Arches, where the invited artists hung their works on site fences.

Traveling roots pay far more attention

The Kunstverein was opened on March 30, 2014 with the Luminale curated by Mirek Macke , which also included the Honsell Bridge as a location. Until then, a traveling exhibition entitled Paying Far More Attention to Roots took place in cooperation with other galleries and exhibition spaces, which was presented in the cities of Weimar, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Berlin, Leipzig and Cologne. The touring exhibition of Montez in Exile , in which more than 300 artists took part, concluded on May 10th at the Night of the Museums 2014 in the new rooms of the Kunstverein. It was "primarily a commitment by the artists to solidarity with one another and to the art scene as fertile soil for new talents and ideas."

The Kunstverein Familie Montez and the Lola Montez Band are named after Lola Montez , the Irish dancer and mistress of King Ludwig I of Bavaria .

Quote

“More than an exhibition space, the Lola Montez was from the beginning a mythically charged place under the city, which functioned as a collective store of excess, experience and experience for a whole generation [...] the work of art has always been the Lola Montez itself, and we were his artists. "
