Christiaan Tonnis' father Dirk Tonnis (April 13, 1914 - August 23, 1985) was a producer of animated films at Toonder Studios in Amsterdam . There he also wrote the sequel story "Detective Kommer" as an author. He later moved to Telesaar and the Saarländischer Rundfunk as program director .

Tonnis' preoccupation with the literature of psychopathology and psychoanalysis is reflected in his early work. These are graphic representations of various clinical pictures such as B. the catatonic rigidity or postpartum psychosis , in which he z. T. "Wires, seams, masks, partial masks - they are sometimes barely visible, they seem so identical to the physiognomy " - over the portraits. From 1986 Tonnis took a painterly position: The new portrait paintings by writers and philosophers also primarily reflect the inner feelings of the protagonists .

This is followed by a series of collages in which cats' heads - placed on the bodies of women - look "sad or dreamy" at the viewer. These are specific portraits attached to people. B. is subtitled with Virginia Woolf , another with Alice Miller .

Participation in the performance "Who let the dogs out, Edith?" During the "Summer Atelier 2009" in the Kunstverein Familie Montez , Frankfurt am Main. "The starting material is Hans-Jürgen Syberberg's staging of Heinrich von Kleist's drama ' Penthesilea ', shown in Frankfurt in 1988 , a monologue by the great actress Edith Clever ."

With the depiction of a golden cross over a black and violet background - divided into individual pixels and painted on the wall - Tonnis is one of 36 international artists who designed the 4.5 meter high, tiled "Pixelkitchen" room in the Günes Theater Frankfurt in January 2013 and thereby bring the digital into the analog world. All "artistic works are glued, painted and nailed to the walls."
