Yingmei Duan

Yingmei Duan (段 英 梅, born October 27, 1969 in Heilongjiang Province , People's Republic of China ) works as a performance , installation and video artist . She has lived and worked in Braunschweig since 1998 .

Life

In the beginning she belonged to the Chinese avant-garde and lived as a painter in Beijing in the legendary bohemian East Village. In 1995 she took part in the performance “To add one meter to an anonymous mountain”, which has since become a classic of Chinese modernism. She became a pure performance artist under the influence of Marina Abramović , with whom she studied from 2000 to 2004 at the HBK in Braunschweig. There she also worked for a year with the filmmaker and action artist Christoph Schlingensief .

In addition to the intensive planning of her work, the experimental openness of her concepts is characteristic of Duan's performances. In 2003 she realized new ideas every day for a month in the solo exhibition “26 days in OKS”; In 2005 she combined performance and installation in the solo exhibition “Playing with 14 rooms”; In 2006, in the group exhibition “Excellent”, she worked on performances on the exhibited works in dialogue with other artists; In 2007 she explored the media of performance and painting in the solo exhibition “Performance Painting”; In 2008 she conceived six lectures on fictional exhibitions in 2015 with “Future of Imagination”; since 2008 she has been working with the Chinese artist Weidong Feng on the performance project “Filial Piety”, which addresses the understanding between artists and their families.

Since 1993 she has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, festivals and workshops, e.g. B. Brazier's International Artists Workshop in England 2003, 1st Performance Festival in Salzau 2005. The participation in a large number of the IPG exhibitions curated by Marina Abramović, e. B. PAC Milan 2003, Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam 2005, Venice Biennale 2007.

Statement

Yingmei Duan is a curious observer who asks questions about all areas of life in order to keep learning. She often realizes situation-related experiments without prejudice and spontaneous, but is also able to plan her performances with great organizational effort down to the last detail. She enjoys working interactively with the audience as much as she does with artist colleagues or friends and acquaintances from a wide variety of professions. Your work is always work in progress, often over long periods of time. Often she acts asleep in a melancholy dream world, appears as sick, as dead.

Yingmei is particularly interested in exploring human instincts, longings and abysses. But it also gets involved in social processes, questions social conventions and behavior.
