The Avtonomni kulturni center Metelkova mesto , (German about Autonomes Kulturisches Zentrum Metelkova City ), Metelkova for short , is an autonomous center for politics and culture in the center of the Slovenian capital Ljubljana . It is located in the immediate vicinity of the train station on the site of the former Yugoslav People's Army , which was stationed there in a barracks complex. After Slovenian independence war and the subsequent withdrawal of the army, the area in 1993 to a kind of free zone, of artists, musicians, gallery owners, organizers and social workers occupied territory. After the shift to the right in 1991, the site was to be converted into a car parking zone. As a consequence and as a result of the beginning of demolition work, the already quite devastated buildings were occupied on September 10, 1993. The site consists of seven buildings and has an area of 12,500 m².

Events and projects

There are regular events and a wide range of projects in the Metelkova. These include an art gallery, a hostel, bars, studios, space for designers and offices for cultural planning and organization. There are also regular concerts with different live music. The spectrum of music on offer ranges from free jazz , heavy metal , punk and noise to dub and techno .

When it increasingly supported LGBT and anti-racist activities and hosted corresponding projects, Metelkova became a target for Nazi skinheads in 1994 .

Clubs and bars

There are several clubs and bars in Metelkova. The biggest club is the Gala Hala , which often hosts events and concerts. Next to it is Channel Zero , where events are more geared towards an audience from the Gothic and EBM scene, for example the monthly EBM event HellEctro . Other clubs are Gromka , Menza pri Koritu and the Tiffany club for gays. In the middle of Metelkova is a smaller bar, Jalla Jalla . At higher temperatures, the majority of Metelkova visitors can be found outdoors.

Demolition of a building

On August 2, 2006, the Inspectorate for Environmental and Spatial Planning demolished one of the buildings, known as the "Little School", under heavy police action after a number of attempts previously started had failed. Shortly afterwards, the squatters decided to build a new school on the site of the old school. The newly built school was deliberately not called a small school again, but was given the symbolic name "Primary School" to show that Metelkova has grown both politically and culturally and has developed further over the years. Nevertheless, the autonomy of the Metelkovas is retained.
