Nikolaus Alexander Nessler (born December 6, 1958 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German artist, graphic designer , author and curator . He lives and works in Frankfurt am Main.

life and work

From 1978 to 1986, Nessler studied art history and Romance studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and art education and Romance studies at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . In 1986 he obtained a Master of Arts (MA) in Modern Philology and Art Studies .

From 1985 to 1986 Nessler was a founding employee of the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt under Christoph Vitali and worked on the realization of exhibitions and publications, including a. The painters and the theater in the 20th century , Paul Klee and the music and masterpieces of European painting 1910-1960 from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum with. He designed and produced the cinema commercials for the Theater am Turm and the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt.

From 1989 to 1991 Nessler lived and worked in Brazil, where, together with Alfons Hug , he conceived and realized the Arte Amazonas project - an artistic contribution to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. Participants in the workshops in the three Amazon cities of Belém , Manaus and Porto Velho included a. Marina Abramovic , Waltércio Caldas , Mark Dion , Antony Gormley , Alfredo Jaar , Julião Sarmento , Tunga and Bill Woodrow .

1993 Nessler began in Brasilia during the Forum de Artes Visuais with the project Depot - Public Warehouse , where part series produced from waste objects - to installations compacted - such as mass goods were presented. Depot 2 took place in 1993 on the occasion of the Styrian Autumn in the Palais Attems in Graz. Guests at Depot 3 at Art Cologne 1994 included Christian Lapie, Peter Rösel and Friedhard Kiekeben, who showed their work in the Daeppen gallery as part of Nessler's concept. Further depot installations followed, most recently in 1997 at the invitation of the Marielies Hess Foundation in Frankfurt am Main.

Between 2011 and 2013 Nessler furnished several productions of TeAtrum VII in Frankfurt am Main : Midsummer Night's Dream in the Montez family art association , 2011, Three times life in the International Theater and stage objects for Lucrezia Borgia in the Gallus Theater , 2013.

Since 2000 Nessler has also been a painter. Strongly rhythmic ornamental flow pictures on mostly large formats form a colored counter-world to the light drawings in dark backgrounds and rooms. His greatest work in public space is the wall design of the stairs from the S-Bahn tracks 101/102 and 103/104 at Frankfurt Central Station, created in 2016.

Nessler uses a wide variety of image carriers, working techniques and materials for the implementation of his visual worlds. Surfaces, for example glass , canvas , polyester fabric , newsprint, corrugated board, cardboard, book body, floors and walls with oil paint , synthetic resin paint , Teerkautschuk , acrylic , tempera , watercolor , pencil or phosphorus processed.

The early slide scratch drawings of the 1980s and 90s

The slide scratch drawings developed by Nessler have been the starting point of his diverse oeuvre with hundreds of works in 24 × 36 mm format since the early 1980s. In the Oktogon II exhibition , which took place in the Wiesbaden State Museum in 1990 , Nessler showed 360 slides - which stand for 360 days a year - and which were on five projectors in an endless cycle with ever new combinations: "An infinite coordinate system " - the slides as "Stones of the world building". The topic is not the passing of time, but the variety of spatial and intellectual perspectives that lie in the line. "Day after day [Nessler] scratches miniatures into an exposed film strip with a fine knife, so makes a kind of diary entry [...] It is noticeable that hardly any of his circles are closed and exist as a being isolated from the world."

Experimental projection and light installations

Based on the slide scratch drawings, Nessler developed further experimental projection and light installations with manually processed film strips and colored light bulbs installed in space, such as the expanded cinema installations Nekrovision - Die Fahrt ins Blau in the Alte Oper , Frankfurt am Main (1984 ), Other places, Oktogon II in the Museum Wiesbaden (1990), Enormous reservoirs of energy in the Kunstverein Hasselbach (1998), Freudenhaus in the Kunstverein Viernheim (2003) and Terremoto - Quake in collaboration with Christiaan Tonnis (film), Nico Rocznik (light) and Manuel Stein (sound) at the Kunsthaus Wiesbaden (2012). With light installations, Nessler took part in the Luminalen in Frankfurt am Main in 2004, 2008, 2014 and 2016 .

Quote

"When I work on slides, I metaphorically enter the darkness, discovering something unconscious before it becomes visible. For me, this is one of the strongest impacts of art. "
