Dietrich Mahlow

Dietrich (Dieter) Paul Mahlow (born August 19, 1920 in Seehausen ; † June 11, 2013 in Darmstadt ) was a German exhibition maker , curator and director of various museums. At that time, in his interdisciplinary, thematic and international work, he was a pioneer and pioneer of what constitutes the profession of freelance exhibition curators, or “curators” in English today. His professional beginnings were in the 1950s to the 1970s as museum director of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden and Kunsthalle Nürnberg, after which he worked as a freelance exhibition maker, lecturer and project-related internationally in Europe and South America.

Life

Dietrich Mahlow studied philosophy, art history, psychology and business administration in Freiburg im Breisgau. and received his doctorate there in 1955 with the topic: The Art in Aesthetics. The art at GW Leibniz and in the Ästhetik AG Baumgartens

During his studies in Freiburg he got to know Franz Mon , with whom he had a very important and lifelong friendship and an exchange about art and exhibition projects. Franz Mon wrote an obituary about Mahlow in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

He lived and worked in Seeheim-Jugenheim . He died at the age of 92 in June 2013 in a Darmstadt hospital.

Curatorial work at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden

In 1956 Dietrich Mahlow became the director of the State Art Gallery in Baden-Baden . Under his leadership (until 1967) the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden developed into a showcase for world cultures: in addition to monographic exhibitions and a. on Hans Arp or Jean Tinguely - exhibitions such as American Ceramics (1960), The Naive Image of the World (1961), Writing and Image (1962/63) in cooperation with Willem Sandberg of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, or Primitive Textile Fabrics from Egypt (1963 ). Mahlow had been on friendly terms with Margarete Lauter since 1962 and worked in an advisory capacity.

Society of Friends of Young Art Baden-Baden

In 1956, together with the journalist Leopold Zahn and the artist Klaus Jürgen-Fischer , he initiated the founding of the Society of Friends of Young Art eV in Baden-Baden; he took over the management. The two institutions worked closely with one another for two decades.

Curatorial work at the Kunsthalle Nürnberg

In 1967 Dietrich Mahlow became the founding director of the Kunsthalle Nürnberg . The establishment is connected with the decision of the city of Nuremberg to build up a collection of international contemporary art. Together with the then cultural advisor of the city, Hermann Glaser , he planned the construction of a museum, which u. a. the newly founded institute for modern art as well as the still to be built up collection of contemporary art should accommodate.

Concept "30 rooms for 30 artists"

The concept he developed, "30 rooms for 30 artists", was visionary, in which selected artists were to be presented in changing exhibitions in their own room. If possible, the artists should design their respective space themselves. The collection to be built up should also focus on a selection of artists whose work development should be documented. When it became apparent in 1971 that the new building would not be implemented for the time being, Mahlow ended his commitment to the Kunsthalle Nürnberg. The commission for the collection of today's Institute for Modern Art in Nuremberg is based on the concept of "30 rooms for 30 artists".

Freelance curatorial work

South America

From 1975 to 1978 Dietrich Mahlow was director of the Museo de Arte Moderno de Caracas (Venezuela). Also in Venezuela, he was involved as a curator in the preparation of the Museo Soto of the Venezuelan visual artist Jesús Rafael Soto . For his work in Venezuela he received a medal from the Venezuelan President.

Dietrich Mahlow was a committee member of the São Paulo Biennale several times .

Lecture tours at Goethe Institutes

On behalf of the Institute for Foreign Relations e. V. (ifa) Dietrich Mahlow made several longer lecture tours throughout South and Central America in the 1960s and 1970s and gave lectures on modern art at Goethe Institutes and universities, even in times of possibly difficult political circumstances. In connection with these trips, he got to know many South American artists and organizers and curators of the art world who often led to lively exchanges and suggestions.

He curated around 250 exhibitions with catalogs and catalogs and was the author and publisher of over thirty artist monographs and television films (with Saarländischer Rundfunk and Südwestfunk) and others. a. with and about DADA , Richard Hülsenbeck , Yves Klein , Jean Tinguely , Tadeuz Kantor , Josef Albers or Chaos and Order .
