Hermann Glaser

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann Glaser (born August 28, 1928 in Nuremberg ; † June 18, 2018 ) was a German cultural historian and journalist .

Life

Glaser studied German , English , history and philosophy in Erlangen and Bristol . He received his doctorate in 1952 from the University of Erlangen on Hamlet in German literature. After ten years as a high school teacher, the successful author moved to a political office as head of school and culture from Nuremberg in 1964. He called for a "civil right culture" in a democratic society. In 1973 he was a co-founder of the self-administered Nuremberg youth center KOMM in order to give more freedom to the young people who were in his view . After the mass arrest in Nuremberg in 1981, he stood by the 140 young people affected. The action, which Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauss himself was involved in triggering , was intended to demonstrate state and police power in Bavaria. All proceedings were put down in the end. (see literature 1981)

He was chairman of the Deutscher Werkbund and had lectureships at the Technical University of Berlin in the field of communication studies (honorary professorship) and in the field of "Culture and Management" at Dresden International University .

In 1964, Glaser wrote the book Spießer-Ideologie , which long before (beginning with Goethe's epic Hermann und Dorothea ) showed the correspondence between German culture and that of National Socialism , just as mediocre philistinism, which also continued in the Federal Republic. Later he wrote, among other things, the cultural history of the Federal Republic of Germany and the small cultural history of Germany in the 20th century . He was co-editor of a German literary history, radio author, essayist and columnist and member of the PEN Center Germany . For 15 years he headed the culture committee of the German Association of Cities .

Glaser died in June 2018 at the age of 89.
