Bill Woodrow (born November 1, 1948 in Henley , Oxfordshire ) is a British sculptor and draftsman .

Life

From 1967 to 1972 Bill Woodrow studied at the Winchester School of Art (1967–1968), St Martin's School of Art, London (1968–1971) and at the Chelsea School of Art , London (1971–1972).

Since 1970 he has participated in various group exhibitions worldwide, including in London , Kuala Lumpur , Teheran , Toulouse , Wolfsburg , Seoul , Valencia , Paris , Berlin , Rio de Janeiro , Chicago , San Francisco , Washington , New York and Kassel (documenta 8), Düsseldorf , Leeds and most recently in the Kunsthalle Wien . 1972 First solo exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery , London; 1978 second exhibition in the Künstlerhaus Hamburg . This was followed by other solo exhibitions in galleries and museums around the world, including the Kunsthalle Basel (1985), the Seattle Art Museum (1988), the Musées des Beaux-arts in Calais and Le Havre (1989), the Kunstverein Munich (1987), at the Mathildenhöhe Institute , Darmstadt (1996) and at the Tate Gallery , London (1988 and 2000).

From 1982 to 1991 he represented Great Britain as an artist at the Sydney (1982), Paris (1982 and 1985) and Sâo Paulo (1983 and 1991) biennials.

In 1986 he was a finalist in the competition for the British Turner Prize ; In 1988 he won the Seattle Museum of Arts Anne Gerber Awards. In 2000/2001 he was invited (not carried out) to a proposal for the fourth, then still empty plinth in Trafalgar Square , London (Regardless of History).

From 1996 to 2001 he was a trustee of the Tate Galleries; since 2002 he has been a member of the Royal Academy of Arts , London; since 2003 he has been trustee of the Imperial War Museum , London; since 2003 member of the Court of Governors of the University of the Arts, London.

Bill Woodrow lives and works in London.
