Blåvand [ ˈblɔvanʔ ] is a Danish North Sea resort in the municipality of Varde . The place has fewer than 200 inhabitants, but more than 2,000 holiday homes.

location

The headland of Blåvands Huk forms the westernmost point of Jutland . Blåvandshuk Fyr lighthouse is here . It rises 39 m above the surrounding dunes and is a much-visited lookout point. The view extends to Vejers Strand in the north and Esbjerg in the south. It was built in 1900 and has been restored in recent years.

The holiday area around Blåvand offers 40 km of sandy beaches. Protected by the large sandbanks of the Horn Rev , which extends up to 20 km into the North Sea, Hvidbjerg Strand is ideal for swimming and windsurfing . The first bathing jetty on the Danish west coast was built here in 2015.

To the north there is the military and nature reserve Kallesmærsk Hede , which is visited by many migratory birds to rest.

The center of Blåvand mainly consists of small shops selling Danish fashion and decorative items, various restaurants and a large food market in the center, which are open all year round. There is a zoo in Blåvand. In addition to various smaller animal species, you can also find camels, monkeys and lions here.

A mini golf course can be found directly at the entrance to the village.

The village of Ho and the Skallingen peninsula are only a few minutes' drive away. This is about 2000 hectares and was only created by sand deposits within the last 400 years.

Until a few years ago there were still uncleared minefields from the Second World War. These were cleared by the government in 2005–2008 for around 13 million euros and are now open to visitors.

Oksbøllejren

Observation tower and former radio measuring station

North on the Kallesmærsk Hede lies the Oksbøllejren military training area . The reserve hospital organization used it regularly. There are hiking and cycling trails through the military area, which are cordoned off during exercises. Maneuver times are set long-term and can also be viewed online. Exercises are largely avoided during the summer months in order not to impair tourism.

Atlantic Wall

Woodrow's "mule"

As on the entire west coast of Denmark, there are also numerous well-preserved bunkers of the Atlantic Wall from the Second World War in the region around Blåvand . The construction of the bunker system was started in 1944 by soldiers of the German navy, forced laborers and Danish companies, but the system was not completed. The bunkers are also used for climbing . British artist Bill Woodrow made mule sculptures out of some of them in 1995.

Museum "Tirpitz"

The Tirpitz -stellung bunker complex houses a museum and experience center. The museum was rebuilt in 2017. Both the history of the Atlantic Wall during the Second World War and the local history are discussed. There is also a large amber museum in the complex, which shows amber and amber jewelry from the Stone Age to the 20th century.

Fiction

The Danish writer and theologian Thomas Lange (1829–1887) set his novel “Eventyrets land” (1868, German Adventure Land) in Blåvandshuk. Lange had spent a few years there; Today he is remembered in the rectory in Ho where he lived. A bust of Thomas Lange is placed in the parish garden.
