Horns Rev

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Horns Rev , German also Horns Riff , is an elongated sandbank consisting of two main parts in the eastern North Sea off the coast of Denmark .

geography

Blåvandshuk Fyr lighthouse

It extends in front of Blåvands Huk , the westernmost point of the west coast of Jutland near Blåvand , north of Esbjerg , in a westerly direction about 20  nautical miles into the North Sea. The sand of the Horns Rev, some of which rises to a depth of just 4 meters, comes from prehistoric glaciers as well as from marine deposits.

Blåvandshuk and Horns Rev divide the west coast of Jutland in a striking way: to the south the large wadden area of the North Sea begins , to the north there is a long chain of high dunes . Between the northeastern and closer to the coast, Indre Horns Rev ("Inner Horns Reef"), which adjoins the Blåvandshuk immediately to the north, and Ydre Horns Rev ("Outer Horns Reef"), which extends further southwest into the North Sea deeper channel, the Slugen up to 20 meters deep , in a general north-westerly direction, which is used by coasters and fishermen .

West the Horns Rev is provided with a shallows tonne marked. To the east, close under land, it can also be crossed by sailors in good weather through the Slugen and Sören Bovbjerg Dyb . From 1914 to 1980, with interruptions due to the war, a Danish lightship was moored at Horns Rev to secure the passage around the reef and the entrance to Esbjerg. The last used there, built in 1913/14 Fyrskib No. 1 - Horns Rev , is now a museum ship in Esbjerg harbor.

Since 2002 Horns Rev has been the location of the first large and until 2004 largest offshore wind farm in the world, Horns Rev Havmøllepark or "Horns Rev 1", with 80  wind turbines and a total output of 160  MW . When the weather is clear, it can be seen with the naked eye from Vejers and Blåvand beaches in a south-westerly direction. In 2009, about ten nautical miles northwest of the "Horns Rev 2" wind farm with 91 wind turbines and a total output of 209 MW, "Horns Rev 3" has been under construction since October 2017.

History

On the night of June 1, 1916, Admiral Reinhard Scheer used the passage through the Horns Rev to return home to Wilhelmshaven with the German deep-sea fleet after the Battle of the Skagerrak in the rear of the British Grand Fleet , which tried to block his way in the North Sea .
