The Künstlerhaus Hamburg was founded in 1977 in Hamburg on Weidenallee. The Künstlerhaus with an exhibition room for contemporary art has been located at Arnoldstrasse 26 since 2003.

history

Since it was founded, there have been over 250 exhibitions by national and international contemporary artists (including Hanne Darboven , Ulrich Rückriem , Richard Long , Martin Kippenberger , Tony Cragg , Albert Oehlen , Markus Oehlen , Harun Farocki , Mariella Mosler , Daniel Richter ). The association Künstlerhaus Hamburg e. V. was founded in 1977 by 21 artists and built with its objective: - To create living, working, exchange and exhibition opportunities in one building, one of the first self-administered artist houses in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The artists redesigned an empty industrial building in Hamburg's Schanzenviertel according to their needs. 21 living / studios, a sculptor's studio and an exhibition room on the ground floor were created.

In 2003 the association lost the building in Weidenallee because a private investor had bought it to offer expensive "lofts" in the "trendy" Schanze district. After an intensive search, the artists found another vacant building, the former hairdressing institute at Arnoldstrasse 26 in Altona / Ottensen. The artists' association teamed up with the film and video artists from the Bildzentrum e. V. together. Once again, the artists jointly converted 1800 m² into a studio and exhibition house with a guest studio for foreign artists. According to the motto: Production - Exchange - Exhibition and under the new name FRISE , 36 draftsmen, painters, sculptors, photo and video artists have lived and worked in this building since then.

Production, exchange, exhibition - the founding motives of the Künstlerhaus apply today as they did then. In individual and group studios, around 40 artists from different areas of media and conceptual discussion work in close proximity. The exchange takes place not only with each other, but with guests, with art institutions in town and country - and worldwide, with partners in France, Japan, Finland, USA, Turkey, Italy, among others. The guest studio accommodates artists from home and abroad. On the ground floor, exhibitions are shown in changing programs, which are usually accompanied by a lecture and film program.
