Henley-on-Thames is a city and Civil Parish in England . It belongs to the district of South Oxfordshire in the county of Oxfordshire and is located on the Thames , about 15 kilometers northeast of Reading and 15 kilometers west of Maidenhead . In 1991 Henley had 10,558 inhabitants.

Henley is a center for the sport of rowing , the Henley Royal Regatta takes place every summer , one of the social highlights of the year for the English upper class. The rowing competitions of the Summer Olympics in 1908 and 1948 were also held on the traditional route of the Henley Royal Regatta on the Thames .

The Neolithic passage tomb of Le Mont de la Ville was moved in 1788 from St. Helier on the Channel Islands Jersey to Wargrave south of Henley-on-Thames (on private property).

Town twinning

Henley-on-Thames has twinned cities with Falaise in France (since 1973) and Leichlingen (Rhineland) in Germany (since 1979). The city also maintains friendly relations with Boroma in Somalia (since 1981).
