Saint Helier ( Jèrriais : St Hélyi, named after St. Helier ) is one of the twelve parishes , the capital and largest city on the Channel Island of Jersey , the largest of the Channel Islands in the English Channel . Saint Helier is located on the south coast of Jersey, has a population of approximately 33,500 inhabitants (2011 census) and is the administrative center of the island; the government building is in Saint Savior . The municipality extended in 2014 over about 9.5 km² (5297 Vergées ), which makes up about 8% of the island's surface. Due to permanent land reclamation, the area in 2017 is given as 5360 vergées (about 10 km²).
history
St Helier was probably settled for the first time during the Roman occupation of Gaul. The parish and city are named after the martyr Helier, who died in Jersey . The parish church, which dates back to the 11th century, was originally built on the edge of the dunes, but is now some distance from the water due to land reclamation measures in later times. An abbey was founded in Saint Helier in 1155 on L'Islet, a tidal island off the current harbor . A castle was built on the site of the abbey, which was closed during the Reformation, to replace Mont Orgueil as the main fortification of the island. The new castle, Elizabeth Castle , was named after his Queen Elizabeth I by the Governor of Jersey 1600–1603, Sir Walter Raleigh . The city's first port was built under George II . On January 6, 1781, the Battle of Jersey was fought in the town's Royal Square, which was the last attempt by French troops to conquer the island. There has been a steady influx of English-speaking settlers since the 1820s.
During the Second World War , Jersey was also occupied by German troops. They vacated the island on May 9, 1945. A sculpture on Liberation Square commemorates the occupation and liberation.
