Vergée

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vergée ( Guernésiais : vergie ; Jèrriais : vrégie ) is an old square measure that was used in different regions and corresponded to a quarter of the local acre . The unit is still officially used in the Channel Islands today .

France

In France the Vergée was in use until the end of the 18th century. It was defined here with 25 square perches (100 square perches = 1 French acre or arpent ). The value of the Vergée varied depending on which value was used for the Perche:

  • 1 Vergée d'arpent = 25 Perches carrées d'arpent (22 × 22 Parisian feet ) = 12,100 Pieds carrés (square feet) ~ 1276.7995749 m²
  • 1 Vergée ordinaire = 25 Perches carrées ordinaires (20 × 20 Parisian feet) = 10,000 Pieds carrés ~ 1055, 2062603 m²
  • 1 Vergée du Roi = 25 Perches carrées du Roi (18 × 18 Parisian feet) = 8100 Pieds carrés ~ 854.7170708 m²

Channel Islands

On the Channel Islands, the Vergée is still used today as the standard measure for land areas. According to the Anglo-Saxon system of measurement (1 acre = 160 square perches ), a Vergée is defined as 40 square perches. As different perches are used on the islands, the Guernsey Vergée has a different area than the Jersey Vergée .

guernsey

In Guernsey, the Vergée (Guernésiais: vergie) consists of 40 square perches with a side length of 21 English feet :

  • 1 Vergée = 40 square perches (21 × 21 English feet) = 17,640 square feet = 1,638,8096256 m²

jersey

On Jersey, the Vergée (Jèrriais: vrégie) consists of 40 square perches with a side length of 22 English feet:

  • 1 Vergée = 40 square perches (22 × 22 English feet) = 19,360 square feet = 1,798.6028544 m²

Similar unit

The Rood in England, like the Vergée on the Channel Islands, is defined as 40 square perches. Since a square perch in England measures only 16 ½ × 16 ½ English feet, the English rood is smaller than the Vergée on the Channel Islands.

  • 1 Rood = 40 square perches (16½ x 16½) = 10,890 square feet = 1011.7141056 m²
