Naming

In the Middle Ages the place was only called Saint Pierre Port . The component port means "port" in French and Norman. The English word port “harbor” is derived from it. This place name has a homonym in Haute-Normandie: Saint-Pierre-en-Port , which at that time was also called Saint Pierre Port ( Saint Pierre port 1319, Saint Pierreport 1412, Saint Pierre Port 1431). Naming ports in this way, with -Port / -port as the second component, is a sign of a Germanic (and Scandinavian - in Normandy) language influence, such as B. Vatteport , Yport , u. s. w.

City structure

Saint Peter Port is divided into four cantons ( cantons ):

  • Canton 1 or North Canton
  • Canton 2 or Canton of the North-West
  • Canton 3 or Canton of the South-West
  • Canton 4 or Canton of the South

The cantons are electoral districts. A representative to the States of Guernsey is elected from each canton of Saint Peter Port , in addition to the two representatives from Saint Peter Port Parish in total. This means that the capital of Guernsey is more strongly represented in the island parliament.

The islands of Herm and Jethou also belong to the Parish Saint Peter Port, but not to any of the four cantons. They belong to the constituency of Saint Peter Port South.

Historically, Saint Peter Port was divided into six bordages :

  1. Durant
  2. Cornet (with Castle Cornet)
  3. Rongefer
  4. Trousse
  5. Landry
  6. Lésant
