Jethou is a small, publicly inaccessible channel island near the island of Herm . The island is 18 hectares and had three permanent residents in 1996; there is a single house ( manor house ). Politically, the island belongs to the Bailiwick of Guernsey , including the city of St. Peter Port (as does the neighboring island of Herm).

There are several smaller islands and rocks in front of the island, including Crevichon a good 200 m further north, and Grande Fauconnière and Petite Fauconnière in the south.

history

From prehistory, kitchen rubbish piles , the remains of a stone circle , two menhirs and a wall have been preserved. There is evidence that the land between Herm and Jethou (today's Percée-Passage) was swept away by a violent storm surge in 709 . At first, like the other Channel Islands, the island was owned by the Duke of Normandy and, with the conquest of England in 1066, became the property of the English royal family . The Channel Islands are not part of the United Kingdom nor a colony , but are as Crown Estates (Engl. Crown dependency ) placed under the British Crown directly. During the Second World War , the island was occupied by the German Wehrmacht .

administration

Internally, Jethou, like the neighboring larger island of Herm , is part of the parish ( parish ) St. Peter Port and belongs to the constituency of St. Peter Port South with Herm. However, it does not belong to any of the four cantons of St. Peter Port.
