) was aplaces
The municipality of Haren included the extensive village of the same name, where the municipal administration has its seat, and the following localities and villages: Essen, Glimmen, Noordlaren, Onnen and Paterswolde (partially).
Location, transport and economy
Haren is located immediately (only about 3.5 km) south of the provincial capital Groningen , as the suburb of which it can be described. It has a train station on the Groningen – Assen – Zwolle line . To the west of the village of Haren, the A28 motorway runs between the same towns. The airport Groningen in Eelde is only a few kilometers from Haren.
In Haren, the biological center was a campus of the University of Groningen , on which the biological faculty and a botanical garden (Hortus Haren) were housed. The beautifully situated village on the edge of a partly wooded hill ( Hondsrug; this only 10-20 meter high "chain of hills" continues in the neighboring province of Drenthe in a south-easterly direction ) is inhabited by many, often wealthy people who go to work every day City of Groningen commute. Water sports tourism is also important because of the proximity to two lakes.
history
People lived in this area as early as the Neolithic Age . South of Haren is the only megalithic barrow in the Netherlands outside the province of Drenthe, where there are 50 of these megalithic monuments . Also from the Roman period are the archaeologists few discoveries were made.
Around 1040 the bishop of Utrecht acquired the area of today's Haren parish called Gorecht . The city of Groningen leased it from him since 1392 and finally bought it from him in 1460 ; Haren belonged to the " Ommeland " (surrounding area) of Groningen.
Between 1215 and 1594 there was a nuns monastery of Cistercian nuns . The Reformation also prevailed here, but without much violence; the last Catholic pastor himself converted to Calvinism and was now allowed to continue to exercise his office as "dominee"; the last ten nuns received a pension and were left in peace.
The predominance of the city of Groningen was felt to be oppressive in Haren in the 18th century . The French Revolution in 1785 was the occasion for a successful uprising. When the French invaded a few years later, Haren soon became an independent municipality. Growth and prosperity came when more and more wealthy Groningers settled in Haren in the 20th century . But the northern quarter, Helpman, had to be given back to the city of Groningen.
On May 23, 1977, on the border with the province of Drenthe, between Glimmen and De Punt, the South Moluccas independence fighters took hostages on the Groningen – Assen train. This was violently ended on June 11th by a special unit of the Dutch military, the Corps Mariniers , in which six of the hostage-takers and two passengers were killed. In the Netherlands, the otherwise peaceful village hit national headlines again in the summer of 2012 when there were serious riots with several hundred young people looting local shops in the vicinity of a birthday party announced on Facebook (so-called “Project X”). In the aftermath, the very cautious demeanor of the police, who used a strongly de-escalating strategy and did not intervene in the looting of the local supermarket, was criticized.
