The Hortus botanicus Haren is a botanical garden in the Groningen district of Haren in the Netherlands. With an area of over 20 hectares it is the largest botanical garden in the country, according to other sources at least one of the largest.

history

The garden goes back to a garden of the pharmacist Henricus Munting, which he laid out in Groningen in 1626. In 1691 the garden passed from the Munting family to the province of Groningen , where it was managed by the University of Groningen . In 1917, a property in the Groningen suburb of Haren was bought and finally in 1967 the garden was completely relocated to Haren.

After the garden was threatened with closure in 1988 for financial reasons, investments were made and the Chinese garden opened in 1995 and the Ogham (Celtic Garden) in 1999 .
