Gorecht

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gorecht ( Gronings Gerecht ) is (since 1392) the original area of jurisdiction of the city of Groningen in today's Netherlands . It consisted for the most part of the areas of today's municipalities of Groningen, Haren and Hoogezand-Sappemeer . Sometimes it is also called the Justice of Selwerd . The Gorecht consists of two parts: the Go east of the Hunze and the Wold west of it. Go has the meaning of Gau .

Originally the Gorecht was part of Drenthe . Later it was combined under the city of Groningen with the Frisian Ommelanden and Westerwolde to form the Dutch province of Groningen .
