Lihou , not to be confused with Lihou Reef , is the smallest at least temporarily inhabited Channel Island with almost 16  hectares and is located about 500 meters west of Guernsey . The tidal island ( English Tidal Iceland ) is at low tide on a paved causeway from Fort Saumarez to reach out. Due to the strong tide differences, the size of the island, which measures a maximum of 400 × 300 meters, is difficult to determine, as large parts of the coast are dry at low tide.

The first traditional settlement took place in the 12th century by Benedictine monks . Only ruins remain of their monastery. The priory "Our Lady of Lihou" is mentioned in a bull of the only English pope , Hadrian IV. , From 1155 as one of the possessions of the monastery of Mont St. Michel . In the novel Green Dolphin Country by Elizabeth Goudge she appears as the "Marie Tape Tour". The murder of a monk took place here in 1302 or 1304, of whose inglorious aftermath the "Bailiff's Cross" between Saint Peter Port and Saint Andrew is a reminder.

The only homestead was built in the 19th century as a textile factory and served as a target for gun target practice during the occupation by National Socialist Germany . In 1984 the writer Robin Borwick acquired Lihou. After the island was bought by the government of Guernsey, Lihou has been used as a school and accommodation for school classes and groups since 1995, allowing them to visit the island with its interesting flora and fauna in the nature reserve .
