The Hauteville House is a town house on Guernsey in the capital Saint Peter Port . The French writer Victor Hugo lived after a stay in Jersey in this house from 1856 to 1870 in exile since he was exiled from France. 1851

history

The house was built around 1800 by a British corsair . It had the reputation of a haunted house intended to haunt a woman who had committed suicide; it therefore remained uninhabited for a long time. Victor Hugo bought the house on May 16, 1856 with the help of the fee he received from the publication of Les Contemplations . Because of his place of residence, he was allowed to stay on the island as Guernsey law did not allow a landowner to be expelled. Hugo had it remodeled, furnished and decorated according to his own designs.

Victor Hugo lived in the house 38 Rue Hauteville in Saint Peter Port from 1856 to 1870 and visited it again in 1872/73, 1875 and in the summer of 1878. In 1862 he completed the novel Les Misérables ( The Misery ) , which was planned from the 1830s and started in France in 1845 , and which was later filmed in many ways. In 1866 he wrote Les Travailleurs de la mer ( The workers of the sea ), a novel set in Guernsey and depicting the hard life of coastal fishermen.

In March 1927, Hugo's descendants handed over the house and its inventory to the city of Paris . It currently houses a French honorary consulate and the Victor Hugo Museum. The rooms on three floors and the extended attic - Hugo's study “Lookout” - which show Hugo's original furnishings and the lushly planted garden are accessible to visitors.
