Alfredo Jaar (* 1956 in Santiago de Chile ) is an artist from Chile . His mostly installation works take up political topics from immigration to the genocide in Rwanda , whereby he also analyzes the media and his own position as a picture producer. Jaar exhibited at numerous international exhibitions, for example at documenta 8 and Documenta11 in Kassel and in 1986 and 2007 at the Venice Biennale .

In 2000 he was a MacArthur Fellow . In summer 2012, three art institutions in Berlin will be showing a comprehensive retrospective. The New Society for Fine Arts (NGBK), the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Berlinische Galerie have chosen different sectors of their oeuvre. For the Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos, which opened in 2010 in Santiago de Chile, Jaar created the underground memorial La Geometría de la Conciencia .

In 2020 Jaar will be awarded the Hasselblad Prize “for his exploration of complex socio-political issues” . "With his calm and meditative work, he directs his attention to humanitarian disasters, military conflicts, political corruption and economic inequality around the world."

Alfredo Jaar is the father of the musician Nicolas Jaar .
