Life
Nicolas Jaar is the son of the visual artist Alfredo Jaar . He spent his childhood in Chile. He returned to New York as a teenager.
In 2004 Jaar began to mix electronic music under the influence of the works of Mulatu Astatke and Erik Satie . He was particularly influenced by the album Thé au Harem d'Archimède by the German techno DJ Ricardo Villalobos . In addition, Jaar names influences such as Ethiopian jazz, hip-hop and trip-hop as well as references to French culture with which he came into contact through his French mother. At the age of 17 he made his debut on the Wolf and Lamb label with the EP The Student . In 2009 Jaar founded his own label Clown and Sunset.
He released his debut album Space Is Only Noise in January 2011. It was highly praised by fans and critics, including the industry magazine Pitchfork rated 8.4 out of 10 as “Best New Music”, and The Guardian gave it four out of five stars. Various trendy websites and magazines voted the album “Album of the Year”, for example Resident Advisor, Mixmag, Crack Mag, and No. # 2 at DJ Mag. For the tour for the album, Jaar founded a band whose sounds he uses the sounds from his laptop and combined with his own singing. The band consists of his former classmates Will Epstein on saxophone and piano, Dave Harrington (with whom Jaar also forms the Duo Darkside) on guitar and Ian Sim on drums.
In 2015, Jaar produced the soundtrack for the French drama Dheepan , which is due to be released that same year. In addition, Nicolas Jaar uploaded the experimental film The Colors of Pomegranates from 1969 to the video platform YouTube and backed it up with his specially produced soundtrack consisting of 20 instrumental pieces. Jaar offers the soundtrack for free download under the title Pomegranates .
Jaar studied comparative literature at Brown University in Providence , Rhode Island .
