action

Three refugees from Sri Lanka come to France and live in the Parisian banlieue . The main character Dheepan previously fought with the Tamil Tigers and lost his wife and child in the civil war . He travels to Europe as a supposedly small family with a strange woman and a child. There you will witness clashes in the drug environment. Dheepan and the woman get closer. In the end, Dheepan turns into a gunman while trying to defend his family.

criticism

Andrew Pulver said in The Guardian that the film "may not be the director's most stirring", but in its "restrained way" it is an "immensely powerful work". Jason Gorber noted on Twitch Film that the film was "polemical but not instructive" beyond "portraying the experience and integration of immigrants ". The "message about humanity and how love can blossom in the most amazing circumstances is extraordinarily moving".

Awards

In addition to winning the Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2015, nine nominations followed at the 2016 César Awards , including in the categories of Best Film , Best Director and Best Actor ( Antonythasan Jesuthasan ).
