Mulatu Astatke (* 1943 in Jimma ; Amharic ሙላቱ አስታጥቄ ; name variant Astatqé ) is an Ethiopian musician ( vibraphone , percussion , keyboard ) and radio host . He is known as the "father of ethio jazz".

Live and act

Astatke came from a wealthy Ethiopian family and went to school in Great Britain in 1956 with the plan to become an aircraft engineer. There he discovered and developed his musical interest; he played the clarinet and percussion instruments. Astatke first received a classical musical education in London , then discovered his inclination for jazz in New York City . Eventually he went to Boston , where he was the first African student at Berklee College of Music and switched to the vibraphone. He became known in professional circles in the 1960s when he combined Western jazz and Latin American music with traditional Ethiopian music and thus created a new style, Ethiojazz . In 1971 he performed with Duke Ellington .

Back in Ethiopia, he founded the African Jazz Village , a mixture of music school and club. As a radio presenter and TV host, he made his compatriots aware of his own rich musical history. Since 2001 he has worked with the US Either / Orchestra ; In 2009 he was on tour with the Heliocentrics . He recorded a joint album with the band, Inspiration Information .

In 2005 the film director Jim Jarmusch used pieces by Astatke in the soundtrack of his film Broken Flowers and helped the musician to gain new fame. On October 9, 2014, the 71-year-old started a European tour with his six-member band in the Düsseldorf Tanzhaus .

Mulatu Astatke lives in Addis Ababa and is married to an English and mathematics teacher . The couple have a son and a daughter.
