Jimma
Coordinates: 7 ° 40 ′ N , 36 ° 50 ′ E
Jimma (also Jima ) is one of the largest cities in western Ethiopia . It was once the capital of the Kaffa region and has been part of the Oromiyaa region since the dissolution of this province . It is located about 250 km southwest of Addis Ababa. According to calculations, the number of inhabitants for 2006 is 132,360.
The northern district of Jiren was the capital of the Kingdom of Oromo until the late 19th century .
The city owes its importance to its location on the caravan route between Shewa and the Kingdom of Kaffa , as well as its proximity to the palace of the former king of Jimma , which is six kilometers from the city center. The city still has various buildings from this period, such as the Abba Jiffar Palace .
The current city of Jimma was founded on the Avetu River by the Italian occupiers in the 1930s. It has a museum, a university, several markets and an airport.
Riots
In March 2011, riots broke out in the Jimma area, triggered by rumors that a Christian had torn up a Koran and used the leaves as toilet paper. Thousands of Christians had to flee their villages after at least 49 churches and other houses had been destroyed, and hundreds fled the region entirely. According to reports, around 15,000 Muslims are believed to have participated in the riot. The local authorities apparently watched the rioting pass.
