List of cities in Ethiopia

Map of Ethiopia

The list of cities in Ethiopia provides an overview of the population development in the larger cities of the East African state of Ethiopia .

The table contains the cities with more than 40,000 inhabitants (according to the 2016 projection based on the results of the 2007 census), the results of the censuses of May 9, 1984, October 11, 1994, May 28, 2007 and an estimate of the Central statistical agency for the year 2016. The administrative unit ( region , possibly zone and woreda ) to which the city belongs is also listed. The capital Addis Ababa and the city of Dire Dawa are independent and do not belong to any state.

The population of all cities relates to the actual city without suburbs and comes from the official censuses and estimates. With suburban belts, cities can have many more inhabitants than stated here. Together with the suburbs, the city of Addis Ababa could have had an estimated 4.5-5.0 million inhabitants in 2016. The next census is scheduled for the course of 2018, then there will be more clarity and the very different numbers and estimates from source to source can be reduced to a common basis.

The cities in italics did not have their own urban woreda (district) in 2007, but rather belonged to a woreda that also included other urban settlements. While the published data for the 2007 census shows the population for each individual urban settlement, the 2016 projection does not. There only the urban population is given for each woreda. The figures for 2016 for these locations are calculated as follows: The percentage of a city in the urban population in 2007 is compared to the projection of the urban population in this woreda for 2016 (example: Mota had 26,177 inhabitants in 2007, 85.56% of the urban population of the Hulet Ej Enese Woreda (30,594). According to the projection of the statistics agency, 50,634 people lived in urban settlements in this woreda in 2016, 85.56% of this number corresponds to 43,222 calculated inhabitants for Mota.

With a suburban belt (metropolitan region or metro area ) the figures in the table would be significantly larger. Outside of the German-speaking area, the population of a larger city is sometimes simply given as the population of the metropolitan region, which then leads to very different figures depending on the source, without knowing where the discrepancies come from. In the case of Ethiopia, a distinction must also be made between the actual city and the region. The woreda in which the city is located often has the same name as the actual city.

Things get even more complex at Dire Dawa, Addis Ababa and Harar . Similar to Addis Ababa, the city of Dire Dawa has the status of a constituted city , whereby the area of the composed city of Dire Dawa includes the actual city of Dire Dawa, which is located within the (larger) woreda Dire Dawa, to which a second woreda gurgura is added , which together then make up the composed city of Dire Dawa. In the case of Harar, the city lies within the ethnic region (state) of the same name ( Harar (region) ), which is only slightly larger than the city of Harar. Here, too, there are occasional mix-ups.

Addis Ababa has long grown together with its own bacon belt and has swallowed the cities and towns in it. From the edge of the metropolis of Addis Ababa to the center it is a quick 20 kilometers. The Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa is six kilometers from the city center, was built outside the city in the early 1960s. It is now almost in the city center. As the city grew, the city limits did not always grow with it. Therefore, a special zone was created outside Addis Ababa, which also includes the merged districts, proper name Special Zone of Oromia around Finfinne . (Finfinne is the name given to the city of Addis Ababa by the Oromo ethnic group , on whose territory Oromia Addis Ababa is located.) This special zone of Oromia around Finfinne has an unknown population, as this special zone was only established in 2008. All in all, Addis Ababa has an unknown population that could be significantly larger than the officially estimated numbers.
