Æscwine (Essex)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Æscwine (also Æscvvine ) († around 587 ) was possibly the first king of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Essex from around 527 to 587 . It is not certain whether he was actually king.

There is no information about Æscwine from contemporary sources. His name is first mentioned in a genealogy from the late 9th century, in which he is listed as Sledda's father . Offa, about whom nothing else is known, is named as his father. He married his son Sledda to Ricola , daughter of King Eormenric of Kent . Presumably, Æscwine was dependent on Eormenric. After his death around 587, Sledda was his successor.
