Arba Minch ( Amharic አርባ ምንጭ Arba Mənč , German 'forty springs' ) is a city in southern Ethiopia . It was the capital of the former province of Gemu-Gofa , today it is in the woreda Arba Minch Zuria in the region of the southern nations, nationalities and peoples . This woreda was initially part of the Semien Omo zone (North Omo), since its division it has belonged to the Gamo Gofa zone .
Arba Minch consists of two districts that are a few kilometers apart. There is a technical university in Arba Minch.
The city is located on two lakes, Lake Abaya in the north and Lake Chamo in the south. The lakes are separated by a chain of hills, which is translated as "God's Bridge".
Sights are the forty springs and a crocodile farm. Boat tours for hippo watching can also be arranged. Nearby is the Nechisar National Park , where wildlife can be seen.
Arba Minch has a small airport that can be reached by single-engine aircraft. From 2011 to September 2015, the United States Armed Forces used a base here for unmanned General Atomics MQ-9 ground combat drones .
According to the Central Statistics Agency , the city had 72,507 inhabitants in 2005. In 1994, of 40,020 residents, 43.84% were Gamo , 24.82% Amharen , 7.79% Oromo , 7.09% Wolaytta , 4.79% Gofa ; 11.67% were from other ethnic groups, including Gurage , Tigray , Konso, and Koyra .
