Mek'ele (also Meqele , Amharic መቀሌ Mäqäle , Tigrinya መቐለ Mäx'älä , English Mekelle ) is the capital of the Tigray region in the far north of Ethiopia and is located approx. 500 km north of Addis Ababa . The city itself puts the population at around 323,700, with an annual growth of over 5 percent.

Mek'elē has a university that includes a. offers agricultural and economics courses. There is also one of the largest vehicle manufacturers in Ethiopia (Mesfin) in Mek'elē.

history

During the Italo-Ethiopian War , the city was fought over. The Italian invaders occupied the fortress in 1896 under the leadership of Lieutenant Giuseppe Galliano and were able to successfully repel two attacks by the Ethiopian troops . The Ethiopians then cut off the supply of fresh drinking water and provisions for the Italian soldiers. The Battle of Mek'elē began on January 8th and ended on January 19th, 1896 with the surrender of the Italians.

In 1984–1985, when there was famine in Ethiopia , the city became famous for the “hunger camps” in the area. The Menschen für Menschen campaign by Karlheinz Böhm tried to organize help for the hungry. In March 1989, Ethiopian government forces lost Mek'ele to the Tigray People's Liberation Front .

population

The 1994 census showed a population of 96,938. The two largest ethnic groups were the Tigray with 96.5% and the Amharen with 1.59%, another 0.99% were Eritrean citizens and the other 0.98%. Tigrinya was spoken as the first language by 96.26% and Amharic by 2.98% of the population. 91.31% were Ethiopian Orthodox Christians and 7.66% Muslim. The illiteracy rate was 48.25%.
