Adama / Nazret

Adama ( Oromo : Adaama , Ge'ez አዳማ ) or Nazret ( ናዝሬት ) is a city in central Ethiopia . It is the capital of the Oromia administrative region and its Misraq Shewa zone (West Shewa ). According to the 2005 census, it had 228,623 inhabitants.

Adama lies at an altitude of 1712 meters at the transition between the highlands of Abyssinia and the lowlands of the East African Rift Valley , so that Oromo and Afar herdsmen and Oromo farmers meet here. The place in its present form owes its origin to the construction of the railway line from Addis Ababa to Djibouti in 1917. Under Haile Selassie , the original Oromo place name was replaced by that of the biblical Nazareth .

In 1994, 44.42% of the 127,842 residents were Amharen , 26.23% Oromo, 7.54% Silt'e , 7.29% Sebat-Bet- Gurage , 6.27% Tigray and 3.63% Soddo-Gurage. 71.18% spoke Amharic as their mother tongue, 13.96% Oromo, 4.31% Silt'e , 3.92% Gurage, 3.7% Tigrinya and 1.33% Soddo.

In addition to the rail connections to Addis Ababa and Djibouti City , Adama has road connections to the lakes in the Rift Valley and to Assela and Assab . Its favorable location allowed it to grow rapidly, from around 39,000 inhabitants in 1970 to around 300,000 inhabitants today.

According to the effective climate classification according to Köppen and Geiger and Geiger, Assela has a tropical savanna climate (Aw). Most of the precipitation falls in the summer months of July and August, while the rest of the year it only rains sporadically.

history

Nazret initially remained a small town. Its growth began around 1954 when sugar plantations with their own refinery were established on the Awash River . In 1960 three power plants were also put into operation on the Awash. Adama became a center for processing local agricultural and livestock products. During the famine in Ethiopia in 1984–1985 , the EC built large warehouses to store supplies of grain.

In 2000, Adama became the new capital of Oromia instead of Addis Ababa and was given its previous name back. This move caused controversy as the Oromo consider Addis Ababa ( Finfinnee ) to be their capital. In addition to Adama, Nekemte , Ambo , Mojo , Zway , Asella and Jimma were considered as regional capital . Adama was chosen based on the city's topography, climate, infrastructure and economy.
