Péter Zsoldos

Péter Zsoldos [ ˈpeter ˈʒoldoʃ ] (born April 20, 1930 in Szentes , † September 26, 1997 ) was a Hungarian science fiction writer.

Life

Péter Zsoldos was born in Szentes (Hungary). He attended school here and graduated from high school. From 1949 he studied composition at the Music Academy in Budapest, where he graduated in 1956 as a music teacher and choir director. He then became a music editor and reporter for the Hungarian radio; in the meantime he studied psychology from 1963 to 1967. Since 1957 he wrote science fiction novels.

From 1998 onwards, the outstanding works of Hungarian science fiction literature have been awarded the Zsoldos Péter Prize by the Avana Association and the city of Salgótarján every year . The name of the association Avana refers to the location of the works in the author's Wiking trilogy.

Zsoldos has written a total of seven novels, of which The Return of the Viking , Distant Fire and The Last Temptation form a trilogy. Zsoldos tells the story of an earthly scientist who stranded on an earth-like planet and unwillingly becomes ruler of a city-state in an early civilization from the pre-Iron Age. Zsoldos uses this arrangement to develop one of his most important themes - the importance of ethical action despite the questionable meaning of the story. The Wiking trilogy and the novel A Feladat have also been published in German.

A Feladat was made into a film by Gábor Várkonyi in 1975.
