Szentes is a city in southeastern Hungary in Csongrád-Csanád county .
It is located in the southern part of the Great Hungarian Plain , on the small Kurca River, immediately before its confluence with the Tisza ( Hungarian Tisza).
Surroundings
Szentes is located about 50 km northeast of the university town of Szeged , the county seat of Csongrád. A few kilometers north-west of Szentes is the town of Csongrád , which gave the county its name. The M5 motorway runs around 35 km west of the city and runs from Budapest via Szeged to Röszke on the border with Serbia .
With a population of 31,082 inhabitants, Szentes is the third largest city in the county (after Szeged and Hódmezővásárhely ).
Others
The city has a thermal bath .
The town hall , which was completed in 1911 according to plans and under the direction of the architect Alois Bohn , is worth seeing . The imposing two-winged building with its high mansard roof dominates both Kossuth Square and Erszébet Square. The two 135 meter long fronts of the building with its dormer windows are connected by a 37 meter high corner tower. The main front is decorated with the city arms of Szentes made of colored majolica. A bust of the city's founder, Baron János György Harruckern, can be seen in the assembly hall of the town hall.
The historicist synagogue building is now a library.
